Cardinals are a vivid treat for the
eyes and easily recognizable from
many yards away especially in the
winter. At right, a male cardinal sits out
a snow shower in a climbing rose bush
as the snow starts to blanket the
background. Below, a female cardinal
waits for her turn at the bird feeder
after a rain storm. Below right, a
female cardinal enjoys a rare sunny
morning in a buddleia bush, which
stays green well into the winter.
A wild cherry
tree is the
favorite
meeting place
for cardinals,
usually in the
late afternoon
just before
sunset. This
male cardinal,
right, and
female
cardinal, left,
reflect the
setting sun.
At left, another male cardinal
waits out a light snowfall in

the same wild
cherry tree, but
as it is winter, the branches
are bare.
